General Rules

  • • BLM lands: Nearly all 18 million acres open for rockhounding
  • • Limited amounts for non-commercial purposes without charge
  • • Hand tools allowed
  • • State Trust Lands available with proper permissions

Permits & Licenses

  • • No permits for casual collecting on BLM lands
  • • State Trust Lands may require access permit
  • • Commercial collecting requires permits

Restrictions

  • • State Parks prohibit destroying or removing geological features
  • • Prohibited in National Parks
  • • Wilderness areas have restrictions
  • • Some areas may have seasonal closures
