Rockhounding Regulations

General Rules

  • • BLM lands: 25 pounds per day plus one piece, 250 pounds per year limit
  • • Hand tools only in most areas
  • • Respect private property boundaries
  • • Pack out all trash
  • • Materials must be for personal use only

Permits & Licenses

  • • No permits required for casual collecting on BLM lands
  • • State Trust Land: Recreational collecting is prohibited
  • • Commercial collecting requires special permits
  • • Some areas require advance reservations

Restrictions

  • • No collecting in National Parks or Monuments
  • • State Parks prohibit all collecting
  • • State Trust Lands prohibit recreational rockhounding
  • • Sensitive archaeological areas are off-limits
  • • Some areas closed during wildlife nesting seasons
